Electric Vehicles: A Sustainable Solution for Air Pollution?
Air pollution is a major environmental issue in cities around the world. The Philippines government decided to take a big step in reducing Air Pollution as they are seeking to replace around 650,000 Trikes with eTrikes and 250,000 Jeepneys.
Electric vehicles can be an effective solution to air pollution as they not emit carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulate matter. But their potential to reduce air pollution in the city will not be fully realized if consumers will not support them. City governments must encourage people to use electric vehicles by making them affordable, easily accessible and reliable. If city governments were to succeed in doing this, then electric vehicles will be able to help address air pollution in the city and contribute to the transition towards fully replacing fossil fuel-based vehicles in the future. The Philippines are taking some step in this direction and are seeking to replace around 650,000 Trikes with eTrikes and 250,000 Jeepneys with Electric Jeepneys.
Successful and widespread deployment of EVs and its supporting infrastructure is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change. Reduced harmful exhaust emissions is good news for our health. Better air quality will lead to fewer health problems and costs caused by air pollution. EVs are also quieter than petrol/diesel vehicles, which means less noise pollution.
